The space did not remain vacant for long, however, as Kildare’s Irish Pub moved in.

Kildare’s owner and CEO Dave Magrogan is eager to introduce Ohio State students to an authentic Irish pub.

So as to not miss out on the bar owner’s dream of the OSU football season, Magrogan said the space is operating as The Pub & Restaurant for the fall. After a full renovation and deep clean, it will re-open in January with “Kildare’s Irish Pub” over its doors.
Even though it is an Irish pub taking the place of a previous Irish bar, Magrogan feels the renovations are necessary.
There is a lot of work that goes into making an authentic Irish pub.

“Though [McFadden's] had a shamrock here and there, there was nothing making it stand out as Irish,” Magrogan said.
Kildare’s is aiming to be different in that everything will be imported from Ireland. There will be a shipment of four containers of Irish bars, furniture and antiques, as well as bric-a-brac, which Magrogan said includes clocks, pictures and old bottles.
Much to the dismay of happy-hour-seeking OSU Students, Kildare’s will focus more on the restaurant aspect as opposed to the bar scene that was McFadden’s. And unlike McFadden’s, which had a popular 18-and-up night on Wednesdays, Kildare’s will be 21-and-up every night after 10 p.m. There will also be nights with live music featured. Local bands are encouraged to send a demo to the marketing director for booking availability.

Kildare’s boasts an award-winning full menu and will serve 12 beers, only one of which will be domestic, Bud Light. In 2005, Zagat gave Kildare’s an “Excellent Rating” for its traditional Irish soul food. All beers will be served in their signature 21-ounce imperial pint glass, and they will not offer plastic cups. Bartenders will expertly pour layered beers, a signature in Irish pubs, where one beer is poured on top of another. For instance, a black and tan is when Guinness is poured on top of a Bass Pale Ale.
Some students are skeptical of Kildare’s being less casual than most campus hangouts. Robert Holbert, a fourth-year in computer science and engineering, has been to the Kildare’s in Newark, Del., at the University of Delaware.

“I’ll probably check [Kildare's] out when it opens but I don’t think I’ll visit it on a regular basis,” Holbert said.

Holbert said his main concern was price because Kildare’s will serve mainly imported beers, which can run up a bar tab.
Magrogan is also concerned with the college students’ budgets and said Kildare’s would always offer daily specials plus premium beer specials, such as $3 for a Stella Artois. In addition, there will be food specials to draw in hungry students, such as $5 burgers and 35-cent wing nights.

Not all are excited about the Irish pub swap.

Morgan Allen, former director of marketing and promotions for McFadden’s and a fourth-year in communication, is sad to see McFadden’s close as she was close with the staff.

“To watch people who worked so hard and had a true love and passion for their job just to have it get taken away from them, and being in a management position, you keep thinking, ‘What could I have done differently to avoid this?’” Allen said.
Though Allen knew McFadden’s had experienced difficulties in the past, she and the other employees thought the business was doing well and the news of its closing came as a surprise to them all.

“I think [Kildare's] is in for a college shock of the century. I know they have other locations at college campuses but no one has seen parties like the Ohio State University,” Allen said.

Magrogan is braced for the impact.

“We want Ohio State students to know that there will be consistency with our service. We provide a great level of customer service in a great atmosphere,” Magrogan said. “You’re going to be treated and fed well and you’ll drink well and have a great time.”

The most authentic Irish Pub in the country was voted 2009’s 7th Best Irish Pub in the world by the online travel magazine; Enduring Wanderlust.

(West Chester, PA)—Restaurateur, Author, Motivational Speaker and Irish Pubs Global board member, Dave Magrogan is proud to announce the opening of Kildare’s newest location at 1576 North High St. South Campus Gateway in Columbus. The restaurant will open in early September (date TBD) as “The Pub and Restaurant” and will remain open throughout football season. They will serve a limited food and drink menu until they close for renovations in December and re-open in January as Kildare’s Authentic Irish Pub offering their award winning authentic Irish menu and their extensive premium draft selection. Patrons will be able to enjoy a fabulous new menu that has been launched in every Kildare’s location around the country.

“We are looking forward to introducing Columbus to our authentic Irish dishes that also keep American preferences in mind,” stated Executive Chef Steve Calise. “Our food is prepared fresh nothing frozen and our chefs have trained with the best in Ireland.”

Magrogan, CEO and Founder of the original Kildare’s, opened his first Kildare’s Irish Pub in West Chester, Pennsylvania in May 2003. A frequent visitor of Ireland, he decided to name the pub after the county Kildare because of it’s the birth place of Arthur Guinness and it is where Guinness brewed his first pint of stout. Magrogan and his team have each pub built in Ireland and then shipped to America.

“We basically keep the outside walls and inside we recreate Irish heritage, pub history and culture,” Magrogan stated. “We will have 6 containers full of Irish artifacts, bars, furniture, and antiques shipped in to use throughout the building and the space will be transformed to an Authentic Irish Pub.

Magrogan, who does not believe in just opening one of anything, opened his second location in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in 2004. Shortly after that, he opened a 3rd location in Manayunk, a section of Philadelphia. The opening of the Newark, De pub soon followed, then Scranton, PA, Chapel Hill, NC, Notre Dame, IN and State College, PA.

Lunch and Dinner is served daily along with weekend Brunch and daily food and drink specials. They will also have Live Irish Music and the venue is perfect for private parties and events.

About Kildare’s Authentic Irish Pub:
All of Kildare’s Pubs have incredible architectural interiors and state-of-the- art bar & beer systems, but it’s the food that is the main attraction. Kildare’s dishes are distinctly and authentically Irish while keeping American preferences in mind. The food is prepared fresh – nothing frozen. Kildare’s chefs have been training with the best in Ireland and now they are excited to be able to offer the freshest authentic Irish cuisines at all locations.

Ireland’s Pubs are much more than simply places for drinking – they are social experiences: theater, debating room, and family room. The entrance of Kildare’s represents Ireland’s Rural Shop Pubs which can have one area serving butter & eggs, while another area serves foaming glasses of stout. As you pass thru the shop pub you enter the “Victorian Pub” often found in the great capital city of Ireland, Dublin where literary scholars would often take refuge.

Another area of Kildare’s represents the “Gaelic Period” of Ireland, with its hand- hewn wooden log chairs and tree trunks from Ireland.
The Pub is an extension of the home. At Kildare’s, this area is represented by the cottage dining room, where the publican would open his doors to friends and neighbors alike for cheerful hours of drinking, storytelling, conversations and music.

Lunch and Dinner are served daily along with Sunday Brunch and daily food and drink specials.

About The Red Cross:
The Red Cross serves the people of the Central Mountain and valley region of Pennsylvania with offices, volunteers and staff in State College and Philipsburg and on the main campus of the Pennsylvania State University. Chapter offices are in Suite 203, 205 E. Beaver Avenue, State College, PA 16801, the Glennland Building, at the corner of Beaver and Pugh Streets in downtown State College.

The primary economic engine of our market is the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), a top-rated national university with an annual operating budget in excess of $2 billion. Its main, University Park, campus with 45,000 students and more than 10,000 full-time faculty and staff, is here in State College.

“We ship everything over from Ireland. We have an authentic Irish menu, great atmosphere, great bands and here you have such a great prestigious university with such a great business community around it as well,” says Kildare’s C.E.O. Dave Magrogan.

Kildare’s has limited hours for the public while it goes through some practice runs. On Friday, it opens to everyone at 10:00 pm. On Saturday, it opens at 9:00 pm. On Sunday and Monday, the public is welcome at 5:00 pm.

Kildare’s will soon be joined in Eddy Street Commons by a Kilwin’s ice cream store, Jamba Juice and a nail salon.
